Wet, Dry, Pre-action and Deluge systems differ based on their pipe contents and activation methods. Wet pipe systems are filled with water; they are common and fast-responding, ideal for areas where freezing is not a concern. Dry pipe systems are filled with compressed air or nitrogen and are designed for use in unheated areas that can freeze.

Pre-action systems require two steps to activate. An external alarm must be triggered, followed by the opening of a sprinkler head to allow water into the pipes. A deluge system is used in a high-hazard area, where all sprinkler heads are open and provide a rapid suppression over a wide area.
